EU names restoration of Nakhchivan railway as key investment project

The European Union considers the restoration of railway infrastructure in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic one of its key investment projects in Azerbaijan, Victor Bojkov, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan, said, according to Report's correspondent in Ganja.

Bojkov said the railway had remained in a deteriorated condition for a long time.

He noted that he recently visited Nakhchivan and, together with a group of experts, inspected the railway section on the Julfa–Nakhchivan route.

"We travelled along this route on a work train moving at around 20 km/h. It took about three hours to cover roughly 20 kilometres," he said.

The EU representative added that specialists are currently assessing the technical condition of the line, the required investment volume, potential rehabilitation mechanisms, and estimated costs.

According to Bojkov, preliminary findings suggest that the railway infrastructure is generally in satisfactory condition.

He also said experts examined bridges, overpasses, and sections of track running along the Araz River, close to the state border.

The project, he stressed, is considered of national importance and is viewed as one of the priority investment directions for Azerbaijan and the European Union.
